The vineyard that is now known as ELDERTON ESTATE was first planted in 1894 by German immigrants the Scholz Family. It was subsequently purchased in 1916 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, who built a sprawling homestead on the property, and sold the luscious fruit to his family’s winery.
It was put on the market and purchased by Lorraine and Neil Ashmead, in extraordinary circumstances. “If you buy the house, I will give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. They then set about growing a family and the Ashmeads worked tirelessly to salvage and restore this phenomenal treasure of a vineyard.
At present, brothers Allister and Cameron (second generation) work with the Elderton Estate vineyard and have also purchased other exceptional vineyards in Craneford and Greenock. Their aim is to showcase the absolute best that the Barossa has to offer.
This hard work paid off when, in 1993 Elderton won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for their 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon.
